The Miracle Marathon

Maybe I should dedicate this blog to the new things I learn about my husband. Here's a new one:

Last night I begged Ben to go for a walk with me and he finally agreed to go, after tons of persuasion. The guy hates to exercise. It might have something to do with the fact that he builds swimming pools for a living, so when he comes home he's ready to rest. Who knows?

So I finally convinced him that it was just going to be a walk and he wouldn't even get sweaty. Well Ben only has about 5 pairs of shoes, and one of them happens to be a pair of running shoes. They've never been worn in the 2 1/2 years that he's owned them, but I pulled them out of the box last night and asked him if he would wear them. He didn't want to because he thought it meant we were going to run instead of walk. He finally consented after I promised I wasn't going to make him run.

We walked a couple of blocks to the park and then walked around the track, and then started back for home. I was pretty antsy the whole time because I kind of feel like walking is a waste of time. I would way rather jog. But I didn't want to risk having Ben never come with me again, so I stayed with him until we got back to our street. Then I asked him if he wanted to just run the rest of the way home and he said, "Okay, do you want to race?" So I said, "Sure." So we raced home and he creamed me. Then when we got there I asked him if he wanted to go again and he said, "Yeah, that felt good!" So we went for a little jog. It was awesome! Like a dream come true! It will probably never happen again, but I'll always have the memory of the one time Ben went running.

Assimilate This

I've never seen an entire episode of Star Trek in my life. I don't think I've even seen 5 whole minutes of an episode of Star Trek. I've been married to Ben for more than 2 years, plus we dated for 5 years before that, and he's never watched Star Trek when I've been around. I didn't even know he liked the show. It's not like it would have been a big deal if he had watched it. I'm totally indifferent towards the whole thing.

Last weekend we were on our way to Las Vegas to hang out with his high school buddies when I found out that the reason we were going was to see some Star Trek production. I thought it was a trick, like Ben didn't want to tell me about it until we were already on the way there so I would be held hostage, but he swears he thought he told me about it. I thought it was going to be like on Galaxy Quest when all of the freaky fans come dressed up as strange aliens and get the cast members' autographs. I thought I was going to feel totally out-of-place since I didn't know a single thing about this series that has probably been on for 20 years. But it ended up being really cool.

It was okay that I didn't know anything about it because I wasn't even quizzed or anything. There was a museum with a timeline from Galileo's birth to the 25th century and it was all completely thought-out so there wasn't a single hole in the plot. Did you know someone even wrote an entire language for one species of made-up aliens? I think it's awesome. And there were two rides, kind of like Star Tours at Disneyland, only more interactive and 18-minutes long each.

While we were waiting in line for these rides, Ben and his friends reminisced about the good ol' days when they went to the private school for nerds who wanted to learn at an accelerated rate and the whole high school was made up of Trekkies. They gave each other Star Trek ranks (probably like captain and admiral) and watched the show every Sunday, plus reruns every night. Be used to have this sticker on his car that said Star Fleet Academy, and for the longest time I thought that was the name of their high school. Surprise...it's a space ship on Star Trek.

I learned a lot last weekend about Star Trek and especially about my husband. Now I think he's cooler than ever!

Funkadellic New Age Slamgrass

Last night Jerry Douglas came to town and played a free concert. That guy is SO GOOD. He made me want to learn to play the dobro. And the best part was that his fiddle player had a mohawk. It was kind of like the whole band was saying, "Even though we play bluegrass instruments, we're WAY beyond bluegrass." They even had the same bass player as Nickel Creek. I wonder if that guy goes around joining bluegrass bands and then turning them into non-bluegrass bands. Or maybe in this case it was Jerry's idea. Maybe he got too sick of bluegrass from playing with Alison Krauss. Well it was a really great concert, nonetheless.

The Indifference

I think I know what my problem is. I'm not opinionated enough to own a blog. I'm totally indifferent about almost everything, so I can never think of anything to write.

Maybe I'll just write about what I did last night. Ben and I went to the park with his aunt, uncle, and cousins to watch a Tongan brass band play. We ate chicken from Sugarhouse Barbecue and it was so yummy. I don't know what their secret is, but their chicken tastes just like camping. Then the plan was to go back to the cousins' house to have brownies and ice cream and play Halo, so I asked to be dropped off at home because I didn't want to stay up all night. Plus I don't enjoy video games very often.

Well they opted out of playing Halo because they wanted me to come have ice cream with them, so I went, even though I hate it when people change their plans for me. It makes me feel whimpy. So anyway, you might think that means we got home at a reasonable hour, but we still ended up staying there until midnight. I don't know how those guys (Ben's cousins/aunt/uncle) can stay up so late all of the time and still get up at 6:30 to go to work. It's hard for me! For some reason, as soon as I graduated from college, I turned into an old fart who has to go to bed on time. Totally lame.

Well it looks like I have a little bit of an opinion after all...at least about people changing their plans for me and going to bed on time. Who knew?
